Scholarships and
Alternative Schooling
Most communities we work in do not have schools after the sixth grade and children have to travel long distances by foot to get to school, which is not always safe. Even when a community does have a middle school, many students cannot afford even the registration fee and school supplies. That’s why we offer partial and full scholarships for students to continue their education past sixth grade. Only girls are eligible for the full scholarships to cover transportation costs and 70% of all scholarships are reserved for girls.
Our Alternative Schooling Program allows those who have dropped out to return to school one day a week all year round with independent study in between classes to complete their next level of education. We have had mothers starting first grade and they are proud to learn to write their own name. We’ve heard many parents tell us that “Homework is a family affair now”. We love seeing parents studying alongside their children and know this program is having a great impact on families and the community at large.

Jefry was 12 when he thought his education had ended. His parents could not afford the uniform, books, and fees required to continue beyond 6th grade. Without support, he would have been forced to leave school like so many children in Honduras.
Through a scholarship from School the World, Jefry received everything he needed to keep going. Today, at 15, he is the first in his family to study beyond elementary school. Each morning he puts on his uniform, walks to class, and sets an example for his younger siblings.
“Every time I go to school, I feel like I’m building a different future for myself and my family,” says Jefry.
