A Father’s Commitment: Wilfredo’s Story of Sacrifice, Education, and Hope

There are moments in life that stay with you forever—moments of sacrifice, determination, and quiet hope.

For Wilfredo, those moments began in childhood.

Growing up as the oldest of ten siblings, Wilfredo never had the opportunity to go to school. The journey was long—over an hour each way, crossing rivers—and his family simply didn’t have the resources to make it possible. Instead, he worked alongside his father, helping support the household.

But even then, Wilfredo understood the value of education.

“I told my brother, ‘Keep studying,’” he recalls. “I’ll work and help you.”

While he worked in the fields and sold goods in the market, he used his earnings to buy his brother shoes and clothes—small but powerful investments in a future he wanted his brother to have.

He didn’t go to school. But he made sure someone in his family could.

Building Something Bigger—Together

Years later, Wilfredo became part of something transformative in his community.

When the opportunity came to build classrooms for local children, families came together to make it happen. There was no land at first. So parents organized. They met, planned, and pooled their resources to purchase it themselves.

Then came the construction.

Without access to basic resources like running water, families carried buckets from the river. They worked side by side—neighbors, parents, and partners—turning effort into something lasting.

“It was like a work party,” Wilfredo says. “A joy we still remember.”

What began as a challenge became a celebration. Two new classrooms stood where there had once been none—built not just with materials, but with commitment, collaboration, and shared purpose.

This is what community-driven change looks like.

As School the World partners with communities, it’s this kind of leadership and ownership that makes lasting impact possible—where families are not just participants, but builders of their children’s future.

A Second Chance at Learning

Today, Wilfredo is part of School the World’s Alternative Education Program—something he never imagined possible for himself.

Like many parents, he carries both the weight of what he missed and the hope of what’s still possible.

Because for Wilfredo, education has never just been about school—it’s about opportunity.

It’s about giving his children choices he didn’t have.

“I want my children to study,” he says, “so they can have better opportunities… so they can earn more, and have a better life.”

The Power of a Father’s Vision

Wilfredo’s story is not one of loss—it’s one of resilience, love, and forward momentum.

It reflects something we see across every community we partner with:
Parents want more for their children. And when given the opportunity, they take action.

At School the World, our role is to walk alongside families like Wilfredo’s—supporting communities as they strengthen their schools, empower parents, and create pathways for children to thrive.

Because lasting change doesn’t happen for communities—it happens with them.

This Father’s Day

This Father’s Day, we celebrate fathers like Wilfredo—
fathers who sacrifice, who show up, who believe in something bigger for their children.

And we’re reminded that education is not just a child’s journey—it’s a family’s.
