Staff Spotlight: From the Same Classroom to Building New Ones

Across the communities where School the World works, leadership doesn’t always begin with a title.
More often, it begins with lived experience, with people who understand firsthand what it means to grow up without access to quality education, and who choose to be part of changing that reality.

For Heydie Cruz, that journey started in a small rural village in northern Honduras.

“I grew up in a village in Olanchito, Yoro,” she shared. “I studied in a school very similar to the ones we build now. There was no electricity, and one teacher would teach multiple grades.”

Her story is not separate from the communities she serves today. It reflects them.

At home, education was always valued, even when it required sacrifice. Raised by her mother and grandmother, Heydie was surrounded by women who believed deeply in her future. To support her children’s education, her mother made the difficult decision to migrate to the United States.

“My mom went to the U.S. to help us keep studying,” Heydie said.

For Heydie, reaching university was not a given. It meant attending a public university with limited financial resources, sharing housing with others to make it affordable, and continuing her studies without access to many of the tools students often take for granted.

“It was a challenge,” she reflected. “We didn’t have many resources. We had to find ways to make it work.”

Step by step, she did.

She became one of the first in her extended family to complete a full university degree, something that once felt out of reach.

Today, Heydie Cruz is a staff engineer with School the World in Honduras.

Her work focuses on building the very classrooms she once needed, safe, durable spaces where children can learn and grow. What makes her work so powerful is not just what she builds. It is the perspective she brings to every community she partners with.

She understands these communities because she is part of them.

At School the World, this is what long-term, community-based change looks like. It is not outsiders coming in to transform communities. It is communities leading change, supported by the right tools, partnerships, and opportunities.

Heydie’s story reflects that model in action. A child shaped by her community. A family that invested in her education. A leader now helping create better opportunities for the next generation.
